Movie: You've Got Mail

1998/119 minutes/color
Rated PG
Directed by Nora Ephron

Continuing with my favorite romantic comedies for August-Romance Awareness month with You've Got Mail. Like my previous pick, When Harry Met Sally..., You've Got Mail stars Meg Ryan, this time with leading man Tom Hanks. Ryan and Hanks have charming, warm chemistry on-screen, and the supporting cast is amazing: Parker Posey, Greg Kinnear, Dabney Coleman, Jean Stapleton, and Dave Chappelle. If you've seen The Shop Around the Corner with Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan (or the musical In the Good Old Summertime), then the storyline will be familiar to you: two people who are falling in love via letter (in this case, email) are enemies of sorts in real life. Screenwriter Nora Ephron puts her own stamp on this tale, updating it (though now the technology is dated!) and infusing it with her own brand of humor and wit. I don't usually like romances that start with one or both main characters already in relationships, but in this movie, it works for me, maybe because the slower pacing of the love story fits for that circumstance. Like When Harry Met Sally..., I've watched You've Got Mail many times since first seeing it in theaters, and it always makes me smile.
